The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum houses the private collection of Calouste Gulbenkian (1869-1955), an Armenian oil magnate who made his fortune negotiating oil concessions in the Middle East. Gulbenkian assembled his collection over 40 years, buying only objects he considered absolutely first-rate. He settled in Lisbon during World War II and bequeathed his collection to Portugal. The purpose-built museum, opened in 1969, sits in a garden designed as part of the total artistic experience.
The collection spans 5,000 years, from ancient Egyptian artifacts through Impressionist painting. Works by Rembrandt, Turner, and Renoir represent European painting at its finest. Gulbenkian's extraordinary Art Nouveau jewelry by René Lalique includes over 150 pieces made exclusively for him. The Islamic art collection reflects his Middle Eastern connections. The museum's setting and thoughtful display create an intimate viewing experience that honors Gulbenkian's refined taste.
