by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1657
Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn painted this figure in armor in 1655, showing a young man weighed down by martial equipment. The subject's pensive expression and the obsolete style of the armor suggest a figure from history or legend, perhaps Alexander the Great or a classical hero.
Rembrandt collected armor and costumes, using them as props in his paintings. The metalwork gleams against a dark background, demonstrating his mastery of rendering reflective surfaces. Scholars debate whether the subject's youthful features and pearl earring might indicate a female figure like Athena. It hangs at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.
