The Convent of San Domenico in Fiesole, overlooking Florence, is a Dominican foundation where Fra Angelico took his vows and spent his early years as a painter. He entered the convent around 1408 and remained until 1436, when the community moved to San Marco in Florence.
The church retains Fra Angelico's Madonna with Angels and Saints altarpiece (c. 1424-1430), though the predella panels were removed to the National Gallery, London. The convent's quiet hilltop setting, with views across the Arno valley, preserves the contemplative atmosphere in which one of the Renaissance's most spiritual painters first developed his art.
