The Dolores Olmedo Museum sits in a 17th-century hacienda in Xochimilco, on the southern edge of Mexico City. It holds the largest private collection of works by Frida Kahlo, assembled by her close friend and patron Dolores Olmedo Patino. The museum opened in 1994 and also houses a major Diego Rivera collection alongside pre-Hispanic art and folk objects.
Kahlo's paintings here include deeply personal works: Frida and the Miscarriage, The Bus, and Henry Ford Hospital (The Flying Bed). Her portraits of Virginia and Alicia Galant show a quieter, more composed side. Portrait of Luther Burbank blends Surrealist imagery with botanical themes. The hacienda's gardens are home to peacocks and Xoloitzcuintli dogs, the hairless breed Kahlo herself kept. Access requires a trip to Xochimilco, but the setting feels worlds away from central Mexico City.
