Museo de Arte Moderno

Mexico City's Museo de Arte Moderno opened in 1964 in Chapultepec Park, part of a broader push by President Adolfo López Mateos to expand the country's cultural institutions. Its galleries focus on Mexican modern art from the 20th century onward, alongside rotating contemporary exhibitions.

The collection's best-known painting is The Two Fridas by Frida Kahlo, a double self-portrait completed in 1939, the same year Kahlo divorced Diego Rivera before remarrying him the following year. Mexico's national culture institute transferred the painting to the museum in December 1966, and it remains one of the most visited single works in the country.

Beyond Kahlo, the museum holds work by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and other figures of Mexican modernism, making it a central stop for understanding how the country's painters responded to the revolution and its aftermath.
