Dulwich Picture Gallery opened in 1817 as England's first purpose-built public art gallery, predating the National Gallery by seven years. Architect Sir John Soane designed the building with overhead lanterns that flood galleries with natural light, establishing a model copied by museums worldwide. The collection originated from paintings assembled for the King of Poland, but political upheaval left them stranded in London. Art dealers Francis Bourgeois and Noel Desenfans bequeathed the works to Dulwich College.
The intimate galleries house Old Masters with particular strength in Baroque painting. Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Poussin, and Rubens are well represented, alongside Canaletto's Venetian views and Gainsborough's portraits. Watteau's Les Plaisirs du Bal captures the Rococo spirit. The mausoleum housing the founders' remains sits integrated into the gallery itself, and the surrounding gardens provide a calm setting in suburban South London.
