Keble College at the University of Oxford was founded in 1870 as a memorial to John Keble, a leader of the Oxford Movement. The college chapel, designed by William Butterfield in an exuberant Victorian Gothic style using patterned polychrome brick, houses one of the most famous religious paintings in Britain.
William Holman Hunt's The Light of the World (1851-1853), depicting Christ knocking at a door overgrown with weeds, hangs in a side chapel. Hunt painted a larger replica (now in St. Paul's Cathedral), but the Keble version is the original. The painting exemplifies the Pre-Raphaelite movement's moral intensity.
