MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Arts

MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts, opened in Rome on May 28, 2010, inside a building designed by Zaha Hadid that won the Stirling Prize the same year. The museum is split into two divisions, MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture, reflecting its double mandate to collect both contemporary artwork and architectural archives.

The art collection includes Widow by Anish Kapoor, alongside work by Gerhard Richter and Maurizio Cattelan, while the architecture wing holds archival material from figures including Carlo Scarpa and Aldo Rossi.

Hadid's building itself, with its curving concrete galleries and cantilevered forms, is often treated as part of the exhibition, a rare case where a museum's architecture competes directly with the art inside it for a visitor's attention.
