The Minneapolis Institute of Art was founded in 1883 and moved into its current Beaux-Arts building, designed by McKim, Mead & White, in 1915. A 2006 expansion by architect Michael Graves added contemporary gallery space.
The museum holds more than 100,000 works spanning 5,000 years, with a particularly deep Asian art collection alongside European painting. Rembrandt van Rijn's Woman Wearing a Gold Chain and Nicolas Poussin's The Death of Germanicus represent the Old Masters holdings.
Modern painting is represented by Franz Marc's The Large Blue Horses and Pierre Bonnard's The Dining Room in the Country, while El Greco's Christ Driving the Traders from the Temple anchors the Renaissance galleries.
