The Musée National Eugène Delacroix occupies the final apartment and studio of Eugène Delacroix, who moved to this quiet courtyard on the Place de Furstemberg in 1857 to be near the Church of Saint-Sulpice, where he was painting murals. He lived and worked here until his death in 1863.
The Société des Amis d'Eugène Delacroix, founded in 1929 (with members including Matisse, Signac, and Denis), fought to preserve the space. It became a national museum in 1971 and joined the Louvre in 2004. The intimate collection includes oil sketches, pastels, drawings, and personal objects that offer a glimpse into the Romantic master's working life.
