Romantic leader Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) championed color and emotional intensity against the Neoclassical precision of his rival Ingres. Born near Paris, possibly the biological son of diplomat Talleyrand who consistently advanced his career, he trained under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. His The Massacre at Chios (1824) and The Death of Sardanapalus (1827) established him as the Romantic movement's standard-bearer, drawing subjects from literature, history, and contemporary events.
Liberty Leading the People (1830), commemorating the July Revolution, became France's most iconic revolutionary image. A woman personifying Liberty strides over barricades holding the tricolor flag, surrounded by fighters from all social classes. A journey to Morocco in 1832 provided Delacroix with exotic subjects that fueled his imagination for decades. His use of complementary colors and visible brushwork influenced the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. The Louvre holds Liberty Leading the People and major works, while his former apartment and studio is now the Musée Delacroix. The National Gallery of Art Washington also holds significant paintings.
