The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) stands as Latin America's most important art museum, founded in 1947 by media magnate Assis Chateaubriand with Italian art dealer Pietro Maria Bardi as director. The collection began with European Old Masters purchased from post-war Europe, establishing Brazil's first comprehensive survey of Western art. The museum moved to its current location in 1968, occupying Lina Bo Bardi's radical modernist building that has become São Paulo's architectural icon.
The building's crimson-red structure suspended 8 meters above ground creates a covered plaza beneath, democratically opening the space to all. Inside, Bo Bardi displayed paintings on clear glass and concrete easels, eliminating hierarchy and chronology. The collection includes works by Rembrandt, Velázquez, and Renoir alongside Brazilian modernists. MASP challenged the notion that great art belonged only in European or North American museums, asserting Brazil's place in global culture.
