Museo del Oro opened in Bogotá on December 22, 1939, under Colombia's central bank, Banco de la República, to protect the country's pre-Columbian metalwork from being melted down for its material value. Today it holds roughly 55,000 gold and metal alloy pieces, the largest such collection in the world, alongside pottery, stone, and textile objects.
Its most famous piece is the Muisca Raft, unearthed in 1969 and depicting the ceremony believed to have inspired the legend of El Dorado. The Quimbaya Poporo, a lime container used in coca rituals, shows the same goldsmithing skill from the related Ancient Muisca tradition further north.
A 2008 expansion added interactive galleries explaining how these cultures mined, alloyed, and worked gold centuries before European contact, and the museum now draws close to 500,000 visitors a year, making it one of Bogotá's most visited sites.

Visiting Museo del Oro
The Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) is in central Bogotá, Colombia. It holds the world's largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold artifacts, with over 34,000 pieces.
The museum displays gold, ceramic, and stone objects from Colombia's indigenous cultures. Its centerpiece is the Muisca Raft, a golden model depicting the legendary El Dorado ceremony.
The Banco de la República founded the museum in 1939 to preserve Colombia's pre-Columbian heritage. It's now one of the most visited museums in South America.
The Museo del Oro is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 7pm, with last entry at 6pm. On Sundays and holidays it runs 10am to 5pm, and it is closed on Mondays.
Admission is COP $21,000 for foreign visitors and COP $10,000 for Colombian nationals and residents. Entry is free for everyone on Sundays, and for children under 12 and adults over 60 any day.
