Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston was founded in 1900, though its first building did not open to the public until 1924. It now ranks as the second-largest art museum in the Americas by gallery space, with nearly 80,000 works spanning 5,000 years.

The Impressionist collection grew significantly with a 1974 gift of fifty paintings from John and Audrey Jones Beck, and includes Paul Cézanne's The Card Players and Pierre-Auguste Renoir's After the Bath.

Twentieth-century painting is represented by Henri Matisse's Woman in a Purple Coat. The museum's holdings also include a 1944 bequest of 83 Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings from Edith and Percy Straus, along with the Glassell Collection of African gold, one of the largest of its kind in the world.
