The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) was founded in 1900 and is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The encyclopedic collection exceeds 70,000 works spanning 6,000 years, housed in a campus designed by a succession of major architects including Mies van der Rohe (1958, 1974) and Rafael Moneo (2000).
Strengths include Latin American art, photography, decorative arts, and European painting. The Bayou Bend Collection, housed in the former home of collector Ima Hogg, preserves one of America's finest collections of early American decorative arts. A $450 million expansion by Steven Holl, completed in 2020, added a new building for modern and contemporary art.
