The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in Washington, D.C., opened in 1987 as the first museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women artists. Founders Wilhelmina and Wallace Holladay began collecting after noticing women were absent from H.W. Janson's influential art history textbook.
The collection of over 6,000 works spans the 16th century to the present, with paintings, sculpture, photography, and video. Lavinia Fontana, Rosa Bonheur, Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo, and Louise Bourgeois are represented. The museum occupies a former Masonic temple near the White House. A $67.5 million renovation completed in 2023 modernized the building.
