Rosa Bonheur completed this dramatic scene of Scottish Highland cattle being driven through rugged terrain. The powerful animals move through a wild landscape, their shaggy coats rendered with Bonheur's characteristic attention to animal anatomy. She was one of the 19th century's most celebrated animal painters.
Bonheur studied animals extensively, even visiting slaughterhouses to understand anatomy. Her monumental animal paintings earned international acclaim. Displayed at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
