Neue Galerie opened in New York in 2001, the result of a decades-long collaboration between art dealer Serge Sabarsky and businessman Ronald Lauder. After Sabarsky died in 1996, Lauder carried the project forward on his own, building a museum dedicated entirely to early 20th-century German and Austrian art and design.
The second floor holds Austrian work, including paintings by Gustav Klimt such as Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II, alongside Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and decorative pieces from the Wiener Werkstätte. The third floor turns to German movements, including Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke, with work by Kandinsky, Klee, and Kirchner.
The museum occupies a 1914 mansion on Fifth Avenue's Museum Mile, giving the collection an intimate, residential setting rather than the sprawling galleries typical of larger New York institutions.
