The Brooklyn Museum was founded in 1823 as the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library, making it one of America's oldest cultural institutions. The current Beaux-Arts building opened in 1897 and has expanded several times since. The museum merged with the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences in 1843 and developed into an encyclopedic collection spanning 5,000 years of global culture. In 2023, the museum celebrated its 200th anniversary.
The Egyptian collection ranks among the finest in the United States, built from purchases and museum excavations since 1902. Charles Edwin Wilbour's heirs donated his collection and library, establishing the renowned Wilbour Library of Egyptology. American art spans from Colonial times through contemporary works, featuring George Bellows, William Blake, and Thomas Eakins. Frans Hals and Baroque masters represent European painting. Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party has been on permanent display since 2002. The museum also holds significant African, Oceanic, and Japanese collections.
Visiting Brooklyn Museum
William Blake's Great Red Dragon series is among the most recognizable works. Eastman Johnson's A Ride for Liberty is a powerful Civil War painting. Frans Hals portraits anchor the European galleries.
It operates on a suggested donation basis, so you can pay what you want. First Saturdays (monthly, 5-11pm) include free programming, live music, and film screenings. Frans Hals and the Dutch paintings are on the fifth floor.
Everything from ancient Egypt to contemporary installations. American Realism is a particular strength. The American art galleries trace from colonial portraits through the Civil War era to 20th-century modernism. The decorative arts period rooms are also worth visiting.
About 560,000 square feet with over 1.5 million objects. It's the second-largest museum in New York City (after the Met). Five floors of galleries. Blake's watercolors and prints are kept in climate-controlled cases due to their fragility.
