The Sprengel Museum in Hanover opened in 1979, built to house the modern art collection donated by chocolate manufacturer Bernhard Sprengel and his wife Margrit. The museum sits on the shores of the Maschsee lake.
The collection covers 20th- and 21st-century art with particular depth in German Expressionism, French Cubism, and Surrealism. Kurt Schwitters, who was born in Hanover, is extensively represented, including a partial reconstruction of his Merzbau environment. Picasso, Klee, Max Ernst, and Niki de Saint Phalle round out one of Germany's most important modern art collections.
