St. Cyril's Monastery (Kyrylivska Tserkva) in Kyiv dates to the 12th century and preserves some of the finest medieval frescoes in Ukraine. The original Byzantine frescoes from the 1140s survive in fragments alongside later 17th-century paintings.
In the 1880s, a young Mikhail Vrubel was commissioned to restore the interior, and he painted new compositions that rank among his greatest works, blending Byzantine iconography with a proto-modernist intensity. The monastery church is now a museum branch of the National Reserve "Sophia of Kyiv," preserving nearly 900 years of Ukrainian sacred art.
