The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe opened in 1846 in a neoclassical building designed by Heinrich Hübsch, originally serving as the Grand Ducal Picture Gallery. The collection grew from Markgravine Karoline Luise's 18th-century acquisitions of 205 works, expanded through 19th-century donations and purchases.
Director Hans Thoma added important works including Matthias Grünewald's Tauberbischofsheim Altarpiece, one of the museum's most celebrated pieces. The Kupferstichkabinett contains over 90,000 prints. The collection spans eight centuries of German, French, Flemish, and Dutch masters, making it one of southwestern Germany's premier art museums.
