Albrecht Dürer painted the devotional image of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, showing him bearing the marks of his Passion. The composition presents Christ for contemplation and prayer with Dürer's characteristic precision.
Dürer was the greatest German Renaissance artist, equally accomplished in painting, printmaking, and drawing. His religious works combine Northern precision with Italian influence. It hangs at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.
