The Tacoma Art Museum was founded in 1935 and moved into its current building at 1701 Pacific Avenue in 2003, a steel-and-glass structure by architect Antoine Predock later expanded by Olson Kundig Architects.
The museum holds the premier public collection of glass by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly, including the suspended Seaform Pavilion (1998) and the Venetian series (1991). Nearly 70 percent of the museum's more than 5,400 works focus on Pacific Northwest artists, including Morris Graves and Mark Tobey.
Additional Chihuly glass pieces, including Ma Chihuly's Floats (2006), are shown alongside a broader collection that stretches from Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas to Andrew Wyeth.
