Dale Chihuly (born 1941) is an American glass sculptor who almost single-handedly elevated blown glass from craft to fine art. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he studied interior design and glass at the University of Wisconsin before founding the Pilchuck Glass School in 1971, which became the center of the American studio glass movement.
Chihuly's large-scale installations fill botanical gardens, museums, and hotel lobbies around the world. His Fiori di Como at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, a 2,000-square-foot ceiling of hand-blown glass flowers, set a Guinness record for the world's largest glass sculpture. He lost sight in one eye in a 1976 car accident and later dislocated a shoulder, leading him to direct teams of glassblowers rather than blowing glass himself.
