The Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini was transformed from a Gothic church into an early Renaissance monument by Leon Battista Alberti between 1447 and 1468, commissioned by the warlord Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. Alberti's marble exterior, inspired by Roman triumphal arches, is one of the earliest applications of classical architecture in Italian church design.
Inside, Agostino di Duccio carved relief panels of extraordinary delicacy depicting planets, zodiac signs, and the liberal arts. Piero della Francesca's fresco of Sigismondo Malatesta kneeling before his patron saint survives in one of the side chapels. The building was never finished; Alberti's planned dome and much of the upper facade were abandoned after Malatesta's political downfall.
