This painting by Piero della Francesca devotional fresco in 1451 for Sigismondo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini. The young ruler kneels in profile before his patron saint Sigismund, who bears a resemblance to the recently deceased Holy Roman Emperor of that name.
The fresco adorns a wall in the Tempio Malatestiano, the Malatesta family church that architect Leon Battista Alberti was transforming into an Early Renaissance monument. Piero likely met Alberti during their overlapping work in Rimini. The geometric clarity and stillness show Piero's mathematical approach to composition. Still in its original location at the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini.
