The Victoria and Albert Museum is the world's largest museum of decorative arts and design, holding over 2.3 million objects across 145 galleries. Founded in 1852 after the Great Exhibition, it was renamed for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1899. The collection covers 5,000 years of creativity: furniture, textiles, ceramics, fashion, photography, sculpture, and painting from every continent.
The painting holdings include John Constable's The Vale of Dedham, Edward Burne-Jones's Merlin and Nimue, and William Blake's visionary works. The V&A also has the world's largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite drawings and the Raphael Cartoons (on loan from the Royal Collection). Entry is free. The building itself, on Cromwell Road in South Kensington, is worth seeing for its tiled courtyards and ornate Victorian architecture.
