André Derain executed this scene of a soldiers' ball in Suresnes, capturing the lively atmosphere of the dance. The work dates from his Fauvist period with its bold, expressive color.
Derain was a leading Fauvist alongside Matisse before later adopting a more classical style. This painting is at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
