Danae

Artemisia Gentileschi composed this Danaë, the princess visited by Zeus in the form of golden rain. This mythological subject was popular with Baroque painters. Gentileschi brought her characteristic drama to the scene.

As a female artist depicting a female subject, Gentileschi offers a distinct perspective. This painting is at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
