Camille Corot painted the rocky landscape near Civita Castellana during one of his Italian trips. The ancient volcanic terrain north of Rome attracted many painters seeking dramatic scenery.
Corot's Italian studies show a more structured approach than his later silvery French landscapes. The clear Mediterranean light and geometric rock formations suited his classical training. These plein air sketches influenced the later Impressionists. This work is held in the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich.
