Camille Corot rendered this luminous view of the ancient Roman bridge at Narni during his formative trip to Italy. The ruined arches span a river valley bathed in soft Italian light, with the Umbrian landscape stretching beyond. This oil sketch captures the spontaneous observation that would influence later Impressionists.
Corot made two versions: this spontaneous plein-air study and a larger, more finished studio painting. The sketch's freshness and directness proved more influential on later artists than his polished Salon works. Corot became a bridge between classical landscape tradition and modern painting. This work hangs at the Louvre in Paris.
