by Claude Monet
Claude Monet rendered this view of Rouen Cathedral in 1894, capturing the facade bathed in direct sunlight. Golden and orange tones warm the Gothic stonework, creating dramatic contrast with the deep shadows in the recessed portals. The thickly applied paint mimics the texture of carved stone.
Monet rented rooms across from the cathedral, moving from canvas to canvas as light changed throughout the day. This sunlit version shows his Impressionist approach at its most intense: the cathedral dissolves into pure color and light. The series was a critical and commercial success, with eight paintings selling before the 1895 exhibition even opened.
