Dante Gabriel Rossetti rendered this portrait of his younger brother William Michael Rossetti. William (1829–1919) was a writer, editor, and critic who served as historian and biographer for the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was recruited as one of the original seven members in 1848.
The Rossetti family was deeply artistic. Their father, an Italian political refugee, was a poet and Dante scholar. Sister Christina became a famous poet, while Dante Gabriel founded the Pre-Raphaelites with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. William documented the movement's history. The title references the orange tones present in this intimate family portrait.
