David Teniers the Younger portrays members of the Antwerp Town Council and Masters of the Armaments Guild in this formal group portrait. The civic leaders pose with the dignity befitting their status in seventeenth-century Flemish society.
Teniers served as court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, for whom he also catalogued the famous art collection. While best known for peasant scenes and tavern interiors, he also produced sophisticated portraits and gallery paintings. This work demonstrates his versatility within Baroque tradition. It now hangs at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
