David Teniers the Younger painted A Smoker Leaning on a Table in 1643, one of many tavern scenes he produced during this prolific period. A peasant figure leans casually on a table, pipe in hand, rendered with the warm earth tones typical of Flemish genre painting.
Teniers was court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and specialized in depicting everyday Flemish life. His tavern scenes, smokers, and peasant gatherings were enormously popular with collectors across Europe. This intimate work captures a moment of quiet leisure with characteristic warmth and humor.
