Dutch artist Gabriel Metsu painted this scene of a Dutch breakfast with characteristic attention to domestic detail. Fine textures of cloth and food are rendered with precision. The figures enjoy their meal in the comfortable interior of a prosperous household.
Metsu was one of the finest Dutch Golden Age genre painters. His quiet domestic scenes rival those of Vermeer and de Hooch. This work is held at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
