Edgar Degas completed this intimate portrait of Marie Dihau, a talented pianist and sister of the bassoonist Désiré Dihau, who was Degas' friend. She sits at the piano in a domestic interior, captured with the artist's characteristic naturalism and unconventional composition.
Degas knew the Dihau family through the Paris Opera orchestra and painted several family members. His portraits often show subjects absorbed in everyday activities rather than formally posed. This work is held at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
