Austrian artist Egon Schiele created this Portrait of Leopold Czihaczek, Standing as a full-length study of his uncle and guardian. Unlike the head studies and seated poses in his other Czihaczek portraits, this work shows the railway official standing, giving a sense of his full physical presence and posture.
Czihaczek took over joint guardianship of Egon and his sister Gertrude after their father's death. Though he disapproved of his nephew's artistic ambitions, preferring he study engineering like the family tradition, he provided housing and support during Schiele's academy years. The standing pose may suggest formality or the uncle's authoritative role in the household.
Schiele's early portraits show competent but conventional technique, influenced by Impressionism. The raw psychological intensity of his mature portraits had not yet emerged. By 1910, artistic and personal differences would end their relationship. The work remains in a private collection.
