by El Greco
El Greco composed this Mount Sinai during his years in Crete, before moving to Spain. The work depicts the famous mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments, showing the monastery of St. Catherine nestled in the rocky landscape.
El Greco combined Byzantine icon traditions with Italian Mannerist innovations, creating a unique personal style. Born Domenikos Theotokopoulos in Crete, he trained as an icon painter before studying in Venice and Rome. This early work resides at the Historical Museum of Crete in Heraklion, connecting him to his birthplace.
