Francis Picabia completed this river scene during his Impressionist period, capturing the atmospheric light effects on the Yonne River's banks. Like his other early works, this painting shows his mastery of the techniques pioneered by Sisley and Pissarro.
The young Picabia completed series of works depicting the same sites under different weather conditions, seasons, and times of day. A 1905 solo exhibition at the prestigious Galerie Haussmann featured 61 such works, earning praise from critic Leon Roger-Miles for understanding the "long effort it took Sisley and Pissarro to conquer light."
This painting reflects nature rendered through the Impressionist lens of capturing momentary light conditions. Currently in a private collection, it represents the brief but successful period before Picabia moved toward more radical artistic experiments.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
