Frans Hals captured a musician playing the rommel pot, a simple friction drum used in Dutch Shrovetide celebrations. The player grins directly at us while children crowd around in excitement. Hals's rapid brushwork conveys spontaneous joy and movement.
The rommel pot was associated with carnival festivities and begging traditions. Hals painted several versions of this subject with lively immediacy. This version hangs at the Art Institute of Chicago.
