Dutch artist Frans Hals painted this portrait of Catarina Both van der Eem with his characteristic lively brushwork. The subject's clothing and bearing reflect her prosperous social position in Dutch Golden Age society.
Hals was the leading portrait painter of Haarlem, famous for capturing personality through spontaneous-seeming brushwork. His technique influenced later painters including Manet. This portrait hangs at the Louvre in Paris.
