by Giorgione
Italian artist Giorgione painted this mysterious youth holding a flute, his soft features emerging from shadow. The Venetian master's sfumato technique creates an atmosphere of reverie and music implied rather than heard. Few paintings by Giorgione survive today.
The artist died young but influenced generations with his poetic, atmospheric approach. This work is held at Hampton Court Palace in London.
