Giotto di Bondone painted the beloved fresco showing Saint Francis of Assisi preaching to a gathering of birds, one of the most famous scenes from the saint's notable life. Francis bends toward the attentive flock, his hand raised in blessing, while a fellow friar watches in amazement at the miracle. The simple composition revolutionized Western painting with its naturalism and emotional directness.
This fresco is part of the great cycle depicting Saint Francis's life in the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, completed around 1300. Giotto broke from the stiff Byzantine tradition, giving his figures weight, volume, and genuine human expression that moved viewers. The scene illustrates Francis's famous sermon, where birds miraculously stayed to listen and flew away only after receiving his blessing.
