Hans Holbein the Younger designed this elaborate title page in the form of a Renaissance architectural niche, demonstrating his versatility beyond portraiture. Classical columns frame an ornamental space filled with decorative motifs, cherubs, and allegorical figures. The design was intended for book printing.
Holbein worked extensively as a book illustrator early in his career, creating woodcuts for Basel publishers before finding fame as a portraitist in England. His Renaissance designs combined Italian architectural forms with Northern precision. This work belongs to the Kunstmuseum Basel.
