Jacques-Louis David completed this portrait with the rigorous technique that made this him the preeminent painter of the Neoclassical movement. David's portraits combined careful draftsmanship with psychological penetration, capturing his subjects with the same clarity he brought to historical scenes. His style of precise contours and sculptural forms defined French painting for a generation.
David served as artistic director of the French Revolution and later as official painter to Napoleon. His career spanned royal commissions, radical propaganda, and imperial portraits. The precision of his technique influenced students including Ingres, Gérard, and Gros, who carried Neoclassicism into the 19th century.
This portrait resides at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. David's major works can be seen at the Louvre, including "The Coronation of Napoleon" and "The Death of Marat."
