Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres executed this confident self-portrait in 1804, showing himself as a young artist in Rome. He gazes directly at the viewer with intense, dark eyes, his face emerging from shadow with carefully modeled features. The dark clothing and neutral background focus attention entirely on the face and hand holding a chalk.
This early work already demonstrates Ingres's mastery of Neoclassical portraiture, with its smooth surfaces and precise draftsmanship. The 24-year-old had just won the Prix de Rome and was beginning his Italian studies. Now at the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France.
