French artist Théodore Géricault painted this dynamic study of a horse emerging from darkness into light, showcasing his lifelong obsession with equine subjects. The animal's muscular form fills the composition, its coat gleaming as it steps forward. A groom steadies the horse, dwarfed by its powerful presence.
Géricault was among the greatest horse painters in history, combining anatomical knowledge with Romantic intensity. He studied horses obsessively, filling notebooks with sketches and spending hours in stables. A riding accident ultimately contributed to his early death at thirty-two. This painting hangs at the Musée Condé in Chantilly.
