by Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico depicted the Evangelist Saint Mark in this devotional panel from the early Renaissance. The saint holds a book representing his Gospel, rendered with the artist's characteristic luminous colors and gentle expression. Gold background elements reflect medieval tradition while the figure shows naturalistic modeling.
Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar who painted exclusively religious subjects with profound spiritual conviction. His delicate technique and serene compositions earned him the nickname "Angelic Brother." This panel is at the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France.
